Typical traditon has been that a women shall take her husbands last name after the wedding, however people do have a choice to hypenate, keep their maiden name or have the husband take the wife’s last name.  Whatever decison the couple makes, there are a few basic steps to keep in mind.

1. Order additional certified copies of your marriage license. You will need orginal copies when you go to change or add a name t0 your bank accounts, social security , drivers license etc..

2. Contact the Social Security Administration to requests and report a change of your name.  Otherwise, your earnings may not be recorded properly and you may not receive all the Social Security you are due. Not changing your name with Social Security also can delay your income tax refund.

To report a name change, fill out an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5). You can get the form at any Social Security office or by calling Social Security’s toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213.

You must show us a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. Documents Social Security may accept to prove a legal name change include:

  • Marriage document;
  • Divorce decree specifically stating you may
    change your name;
  • Certificate of Naturalization showing a new name; or
  • Court order for a name change.
  • If the documents you provide for a legal name change do not give enough information to identify you, then you also must show two identity documents including:
  • One document in your old name; and
  • A second document with your new legal name.

In addition to your name, these documents must also contain identifying information or a recent photograph.

If you are a U.S. citizen born outside the United States and our records do not show you are a citizen, you will need to provide proof of your U.S. citizenship. If you are not a U.S. citizen, Social Security will ask to see your current immigration documents.

The new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name

3. Go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles. We recommend that you call them first to inform that you are coming in for a name and address change on your license and ask what forms of documentation you will need to bring in as well as the cost to make these changes on your license.

4. If you have a passport or are going on a honeymoon or future trip that will require a passport then you will need to remember to bring a certified copy of your marriage license.  In order to start passport processing, you must  bring proof of identification and proof of U.S. citizenship. The Department of State will not allow processing of  passport name change without these credentials.

5. Be sure to contact the following agencies/companies to update your accounts with your name, address, phone number changes and updates on accounts and beneficiaries on your accounts :

  • post office,
  • credit card companies,
  • banks, credit unions,
  • pharmacies, doctors offices,
  • schools,
  • life insurnace, auto insurance and home owners insurance companies,
  • employer,
  • investment companies, employer 401 K programs or pension plans,
  • utilities (electric company, phone company, cell phones, internet, water, gas, garbage disposal)

It’s a question that every bride asks herself.  What should I do with my hair for my big day? Do I wear it up, do I wear it down, curly or straight?  What to do?

Here is what I would suggest,  before you decide how you want to wear your hair, you may want to decide if you are wearing a vail, tiara or flowers in your hair.  Try different vails, tiara’s and flowers with your hair up and with your hair down. After you have made that decision , then you may want to look through bridal magazines and books at a beauty salon long before the big day. Bring your pictures and ideas with to the beauty salon so the stylist will know just what you want for your special day. Some future brides use the internet “You Tube” or blogs like this one to post pictures of themselves with different hairstyles and ask people for their opinions. Keep in mind that a good hairstylist will have some ideas too and most salons can do your hair, makeup and nails all in one day. You may want to consider booking an appointment for yourself and your bridal attendants to enjoy alittle pampering time  prior to your ceremony. Why not take this time to present your bridesmaids with a personalized  cute and chic cosmetic bag“The Cosmopolitan” Monogrammed Cosmetic Travel Bag Your girls are sure to love it and can even use it on the day of the wedding to carry their makeup & lipstick.

If you are a do-it yourself kind of gal then you can save money and time by doing your hair yourself at home. What ever you choose you should consider checking out the attached video, it shows some beautiful hairstyles that will wow your groom on your special day.

Why not do something unique for your wedding reception that will thrill your guests? First start off the reception by having really unique wedding favors on the tables , then why not surprise your guests with a non-traditonal first dance. I found a really entertaining show on TLC called “Rock The Reception” where the bride and groom and wedding party learn a special first dance routine to perform at the wedding reception.

If you haven’t seen this show yet, you have to check it out to get  great first dance ideas and set the tone for a really fun & fabulous wedding reception. This unique first dance coupled with truly unique  keepsake wedding favors will have your guests remembering your special wedding  for years to come. Check out the video from YouTube to see an example of a really fun first dance.  Then click on any picture of a wedding favor to get great prices on elegant wedding keepsakes.

Did you know that you can have an affordable elegant summer wedding , by making a few adjustments to your wedding budget. Here are 10 suggestions to help you save costs on your wedding.

  • First ask your your wedding attendants to purchase or rent their own wedding attire. You don’t necessarily need to have all your bridesmaids wearing the same dress. You may want to tell your bridesmaids and groomsmen your color or theme preferences and allow your attendants the freedom to choose the style of dress or  dress shirt that they want. For your bridal dress you may want to check out a second hand wedding dress store, or look for a local discount wedding dress store in your area. You may want to consider renting your dress.
  • Second, consider having your wedding at a location that has natural beautiful scenery, like an aboreteum , garden, or lakefront.  There will be no need for the expense of decorations when you can use nature as your decorations. Also by having your ceremony at an outdoor venue, rather then in a church you will cut out the cost of renting a church.
  • Third, make inexpensive summer centerpieces with fresh cut summer flowers placed in a vase on top of a mirrored circular placemate surrounded by small elegant heart shaped votive candles.
  • Fourth, as far as you wedding cake costs, you can save money by  calling a local culinary school to see if the students would be willing to prepare your wedding cake at cost.
  • Fifth, cut out the cost of  your cake topper and wedding cake cuterly by registering for these items as gifts you would like to receive prior to the weding at your bridal shower. Allow one of your guests, friends or family to purchase these items for you as a gift.
  • Sixth, purchase inexpensive bouquets and dress them up yourself with babies breath, lace, pearls and beads.
  • Seventh , for really great table favors and place card holders you can save lots of money by purchasing a table favor that doubles as a placecard holder. You can give your guests a mini photo frame or frosted glass frame placecard holder that your guest are sure to enjoy long after the wedding. Elegant Shower Favor.com has a hugh selection of affordable favors, and they even have free shipping on favor and gift orders of $ 100 or more.
  • Eighth, to save costs on food served at your wedding, negotiate the cost of the food with the caterer or wedding reception facility. Choose foods that would require the same ingredients like a chicken vesuvio and a chicken parmesian. This will save on costs. Also be sure to ask the caterer or reception hall for discounts on meals for children. You should never have to pay full price for a meal for a child.
  • Ninth, serve a limit on the type of alcohol you serve at your wedding. Think about a kegs of beer or a beer truck that serves beer and wine from the tap. Limit the chooses of alcohol or offer a few specialty drinks that would coordinate with your wedding theme. Or consider an alcohol free wedding.
  • Tenth, save money on your photographer and DJ or Bands by shopping around. You may be able to save boo ko bucks on these services by asking a local  college for names of photography and film students who would be willing to provide photography and videotaping services very inexpensively.  Also remember that you can get  lots of great wedding pictures  from your guests. Put camera’s on the reception tables and ask your guests to take pictures and leave the cameras behind so you can develop your pictures yourself at a Sams club or Costco.
